POLICE have been forced to shelve their hunt for a sex attacker who groped a woman along a busy city street.

The female, aged in her 20s, was walking along Winston Churchill Avenue with friends when she was ambushed after stopping briefly near to Portsmouth Crown Court and Harry Law Halls.

The man approached the victim and sexually assaulted her before she managed to run away back towards her friends.

The incident happened at 2am on Friday August 27, prompting police to release an e-fit image of a man.

But despite the appeal, the case has been filed after a lack of evidence.

A spokeswoman said: ‘We have investigated all lines of enquiry currently available to us in this case, including CCTV scoping and working to identify any witnesses.

‘This case has currently been filed however this will be reviewed should any new information or lines of enquiry come to light.

‘Anyone with information is asked to contact us via 101 or our website.’
