BIG cupboards, little cupboards, cold cupboards, messy, clean or empty - all are welcome to a new Facebook group set up to spread some humour and raise cash for a domestic abuse charity.

David Morris, a caretaker at the Gunwharf Quays estate, set up Rate My Cupboard (RMC) two weeks ago to give people a laugh and to raise money for Refuge, which has seen a 120 per cent increase in calls and contacts on one day alone to its National Domestic Abuse Helpline.

The 28-year-old said: ‘People are raising loads of money for the NHS which is amazing but I think there are other charities out there who need a boost at this time as well.

‘For me I thought Refuge would be a good one to help because lockdown may mean that some people are stuck indoors with some rather nasty people and they need support.’

David launched a Just Giving page and he has already raised £430 of a £500 target and hopes the RMC group, which is nearly at 1,400 members, will keep the fundraising going.

He said: ‘Obviously the inspiration of the group was Rate My Plate but I just thought it would be funny to have cupboards because they are quite mundane but people have been putting some funny comments.

‘I think at a time when people are spending a lot of time on Facebook and seeing mainly bad things happening, I thought something stupid and funny like this would spread a little humour.

‘I also hope the more members we get, the more money we can raise for a deserving charity.’

It comes after domestic abuse survivor Tori Tisson from Portsmouth shared her story and urged people to help victims during lockdown.

Just 12 months ago the 22-year-old from Portsmouth, who suffered emotional and physical abuse for seven months, wants the public to realise their role in helping potential victims.
