A reader has sent me eight naval postcards, five of which show a biplane that has gone over the side of a carrier.

Could the reader let me know who you are or, if you wish to remain anonymous and I can keep the postcards, thank you very much.

Here we see the rescue attempt to save a stricken plane with sailors attaching ropes for the operation; the plane being hauled from the sea and finally it being landed back on the carrier’s deck.

In another postcard, the pilot can be seen safe and sound.
