Old war missile is pulled up by fishing boat

AN OLD war missile was pulled up by fishermen.

The fishing boat, Versatile, pulled up the large bomb in the Solent.

Coastguard were notified of the discovery at about 1.35am today.

A coastguard spokesman said: ‘It was quite large.

‘It looked to be a very big missile. It was quite old.’

The missile was towed to Hardway Marina, at Fareham.

Officers from Portsmouth and Hill Head went to the scene, as well as Hampshire Police, the Ministry of Defence and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

‘They managed to action a 150m safety zone around the ordnance,’ said the coastguard spokesman.

The missile was taken to a spot in the Solent north of Ryde Sands on the Isle of Wight where a controlled explosion took place. The incident was closed at 12.37pm.
