Karl Robinson will demand even more from Oxford United when they travel to Pompey after a ‘sensational’ performance at Wigan.

Kenny Jackett side get set for their latest battle with the U’s after both teams suffered League One play-off heartbreak last season.

Oxford knocked out the Blues on penalties at the Kassam Stadium before being defeated by Wycombe in the final at Wembley.

Robinson’s men were well fancied to go up this term but have had a tough opening to the campaign and languish 19th in the table.

However, the U’s picked up a much-needed 2-1 win against Wigan on Saturday, with danger-men Matty Taylor and James Henry netting.

And after a string of results that have been ‘hurting’ Robinson, he still knows there’s still a lot more required from his side.

He told the Oxford Mail: ‘I thought we were sensational. In the first half, we were very good.

‘Take the Crewe and Sunderland games away, our players have been good and we’ve not had the luck we’ve deserved.

‘We could have been out of sight at half-time, but it’s a great cross and a great goal from them and I thought “here we go again”.

‘We ended up holding on, which was a bit unfair for probably 90 per cent of our performance.

‘I’m really pleased - that’s for the fans and the people that have stayed positive with us.

‘This has really been hurting and don’t think I’m now thinking that we’ve cracked it.

‘You know the demands I have for my players and we’ve still got a long way to go.’

Phil Parkinson defended his Sunderland troops after they dropped to eighth after a 1-1 draw with Doncaster.

Grant Leadbitter bagged for the Black Cats but that was cancelled out by Fejiri Okenabirhie’s late strike.

However, Parkinson – who’s come under pressure from sections of Mackems – still felt Sunderland’s performance was a good one.

‘We should be talking about three points and being off and running again,’ he told the Sunderland Echo.

‘It's funny, sometimes when you have a bit of a dip, as we've had through the cup game and with last Saturday's defeat, things do go against you.

‘But like I've always said, you've got to focus on performance levels like and we'll come through the other side of it because we're a good team.

‘The quality level of our performance through our 90 minutes was good.’

Joey Barton is predicting ‘an exciting season’ for Fleetwood after they thrashed Plymouth 5-1.

The Cod Army – who lost to Wycombe in last season’s play-off semi-finals – are up to seventh following a slow start.

Barton told the club’s website: ‘I spoke to our lads before the game and I said if we reach the standard of our performance that we demand from ourselves it’s going to be very, very tough for sides in our division to stay with that where that was proven.

‘This could be an exciting season for Fleetwood as we intend on being better than what we were last season.

‘We want to get fans back in this season, but we want the fans to strap themselves in because this could be a very, very exciting ride as a Fleetwood Town fan.’

Lee Bowyer laughed off claims from counterpart Steve Evans that Charlton have a £10m playing budget after their 1-1 draw against Gillingham at Priestfield.

He told the South London Press: ‘I’ve got nothing but respect for him. I respect everyone that I stand alongside in the dugout. Steve Evans is no different.

‘If anything, I think he just needs to know the facts of like when he goes to talk about in the press, he said that we had a £10million budget. I don’t know where he got that number from.

‘Maybe he got confused with that’s how much we’ve brought into the club (through player sales).

‘We certainly didn’t have £10m. If you cut it in half, then that’s what we had in the Championship last year. I would love to have had £10million, I can tell you. So, he’s completely wrong there.

‘But apart from that, he’s okay. He’s passionate, isn’t he? Everyone has got their way of doing it and that’s his way. I have nothing but respect for everyone I come up against.’
